China-Scotland Business Breakfast*/**

Thursday 10 April 2014, 8.30-10.30am

Venue: Sir Charles Wilson Building, University of Glasgow

In partnership with the University of Glasgow

Members’ are invited to attend SCDI’s ‘China-Scotland Business Breakfast’ event which is being delivered in partnership with the University of Glasgow. The University of Glasgow has strong links with the People’s Republic of China; having welcomed its first Chinese student in 1886 the university now teaches an average of 1,500 Chinese students each year. The university has recently established a Confucius Institute to further develop its international partnership with Nankai University and is also home to the Scottish Centre for Chinese Social Science Research. SCDI also has a strong relationship with China having led 12 visits to China and 44 to Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

China has been identified by the Scottish government as a high priority market and Scottish exports to China reached their highest level in 2013 totalling to almost £560 million. China is currently experiencing unprecedented growth rates of around 9% presenting an abundance of opportunities for Scottish companies. This event will bring together Scotland’s international business community and in-market experts to provide an economic, academic and business overview of the Chinese market.

The event will be hosted by Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow and will feature a panel of Chinese experts and Scottish SME’s. There will also be the opportunity to network with a range of Scottish companies who have a likeminded interest in the Chinese market and learn how the university developed a successful social media presence in China.

SCDI FORUM 2014 - ‘SCOTLAND: BEYOND THE HORIZON’

Thursday 1 – Friday 2 May 2014

Venue: RBS HQ, Gogarburn, Edinburgh

The SCDI Forum is the leading policy and networking event in the Scottish business and economic calendar and has a clear agenda - to stimulate economic growth for Scotland.

It brings together 300 senior influencers, from across all sectors of the economy, with first-hand experience of success in areas vital to Scotland’s future economic prosperity.

In what is shaping up to be a momentous and busy year for Scotland, the Forum 2014 will look beyond electoral cycles and address the long-term opportunities and challenges for the Scottish economy in a global context.

Recognising that Scotland must be on the cusp of opportunities in areas of global growth, while generating more inclusive local growth, the Forum will have a particular focus on improvements which evidence shows would strengthen our economic performance:

Innovation – capitalising on the dynamism and potential in our educational institutions, businesses and workforces; successful industrial strategy and market creation; and a greater emphasis on the ‘D’ in R&D

Infrastructure – attracting investment and accelerating delivery to provide competitive, world-class internal and external connectivity

Skills – maximising Scotland’s human capital by setting the pace in the global skills race and enabling everyone to develop and make the most of their talents

The Forum will be the platform to generate and discuss the ideas and insights which will be developed into SCDI’s refreshed Blueprint for the Scottish Economy, for publication in 2015.

Scotland needs more “born-global” companies and people. This is your opportunity to play a leading role in shaping Scotland's economic future.
